Digital downloads are yours to use as you see fit for personal (not commercial) use - feel free to post on Facebook, etc. The low resolution size is suitable for sharing and viewing, but not ideal for prints. I have talked to some that were happy with these in photo books (such as Shutterfly). I did recently add a second higher resolution option for digital downloads that will be better if you're looking to do anything that's a bit larger. See examples of the two sizes at the bottom of this page.
The prints come from a highly regarded professional photo lab. All prints include professional color correction. As you have probably noticed, colors of a picture may vary from monitor to monitor and printer to printer. And getting the color 'temperature' right can be very challenging under high school lighting, etc. While I do my best at color correction myself, some may still have a yellow coloring to them. The professional color correction ensures the colors are optimized for the lab's printing equipment. Digital downloads have no additional correction performed however.
I have currently set a 3 day 'proof delay' for orders. This allows me to briefly review any orders before being processed. On some occasions when larger prints are ordered, I may find it beneficial to change the crop of the image based on different ratios for the various photo sizes.
I am currently only offering print sizes of 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10. While the lab offers prints much larger, I want to ensure quality to anyone who orders prints. The settings required for me to capture the speed of sports under the less than ideal lighting conditions can result in image "noise" (pixelation). While I am able to clean up that noise to make smaller prints presentable, the larger sizes would show that noise more pronounced. And I don't want to risk anyone being disappointed with the quality of larger images, which can certainly be quite expensive. But if you're interested in a print larger than 8x10 in size, please contact me and I'll give you an honest opinion for a particular picture. Pictures taken outside in daylight for example will be fine for a much larger size.
The pictures that you see displayed on the site are cropped in the ratio that the camera takes them in. That is the same as the aspect ratio of a 4x6 print. However, you will notice that if you order a 5x7 or 8x10 the aspect ratio will change and it will ask you to adjust the crop. If in adjusting that crop you are not happy with it, please let me know and I may be able to adjust my original crop for the print size you are looking for and make it look better. Please contact me if this occurs.
Here's an example image (not mine) of the different ratios and their impact on a print for three common sizes:
